Louisiana Landmarks Society is proud to celebrate the designation of New Orleans as one of ten sites on the World Monuments Fund's inaugural Irreplaceable America list. Created in advance of the nation's 250th anniversary, the initiative recognizes places whose preservation is essential to understanding the richness and complexity of American history.
Unlike the other sites recognized, New Orleans was selected not for a single landmark, but as an entire living cultural landscape. The designation recognizes that the city's historic neighborhoods, vernacular architecture, waterways, traditions, craftsmanship, and daily life are deeply interconnected and cannot be separated from one another.
The nomination was developed through a collaborative effort led by the Preservation Resource Center in partnership with Tulane University's Historic Preservation Program, Louisiana Landmarks Society, The Ella Project, and The Water Collaborative. Together, the partners presented a vision of preservation that extends beyond individual buildings to encompass the people, culture, environmental resilience, and traditional skills that define New Orleans.
As the Preservation Resource Center noted, "New Orleans itself is irreplaceable, not just one building, one district, or one monument, but the entire living city."
Tulane University's Historic Preservation Program emphasized that New Orleans' distinctive vernacular architecture, neighborhoods, and living heritage demonstrate why preservation remains vital to the city's future and to the nation as a whole.
Louisiana Landmarks Society believes this recognition underscores a truth preservationists have long understood:
"New Orleans is unlike anywhere else in the world — its culture, its architecture, its people are woven together in a way no other city can replicate. This designation affirms what we have long understood: that heritage is inseparable from the built environment that holds it. Sustained investment in our historic buildings, neighborhoods, infrastructure, and communities is how we keep this irreplaceable city livable, authentic, and thriving for generations to come."
This recognition provides a national platform for conversations about preservation, climate resilience, housing, cultural continuity, and the stewardship of one of America's most remarkable cities. Louisiana Landmarks Society is honored to have contributed to this effort and looks forward to continuing our work with partners across New Orleans to protect the places, stories, and traditions that make our city truly irreplaceable.
