RE: Louisiana Landmarks Society supports Landmark Study of 1820 Milan Street

Dear Historic District Landmarks Commission,

Louisiana Landmarks Society fully supports for the nomination of the property located at 1820 Milan Street for landmark study. As the home of Walker Percy, one of New Orleans' and the nation's most influential 20th century literary figures, 1820 Milan Street property meets criteria outlined in the New Orleans landmarks ordinance for buildings and sites of historic importance:

While not architecturally grand, the home is a quintessential example of a modest early 20th century New Orleans house. Built in 1865, it retains many original features and materials, and represents a cultural legacy of modest working-class homes that helped shape New Orleans' authentic neighborhoods and community fabric. Preserving buildings like this furthers our understanding of diverse lived experiences.

Walker Percy purchased the home at 1820 Milan Street in 1957. It was in this home where he wrote the 1961 National Book Award-winning novel, “The Moviegoer”, which explored existential themes distinctly shaped by New Orleans' unique character. His writings profoundly influenced Southern literature and philosophy.

In a city that has lost so many historic structures, protecting places with architectural, cultural, and historic merit is paramount. 1820 Milan deserves official recognition to preserve this link to Walker Percy's life and career for future generations.

We thank you for your consideration.

 Sincerely,

Sandra Stokes
