Re: HANO Mazant-Royal Section 106 Consultation – reduced design

Dear Ms. Wollan:

Louisiana Landmarks Society appreciates the opportunity to summit comments on the latest design and AMOA for the HANO Mazant/Royal Section 106. We also thank the other parties for responding to most of our questions following the March 27, 2024 meeting, and understand that more information will be forthcoming.

We are pleased to see that the project will be 100% affordable housing, restricted to 60% of AMI or less, and for a minimum of 99 years. We are also happy to see that the older growth trees will be preserved by removing some of the extra parking spaces. And although we know the project will comply with the city’s minimum requirements for permeable paving, we remain hopeful that the developers will exceed the minimums.

We note there are currently two historical markers on the site. We would like to ensure that both will be returned and erected on the site after.

It is understood that the next meeting will provide more answers to our questions. We are particularly interested to know that the HDLC has reviewed the latest plans, and to see their comments. As discussed at length during earlier 106 sessions, the input of HDLC’s expertise for such a large scale, new development within a local and National Register historic district should be a critical component for the protection of impacted historic resources.

We would also request that all of these points be enshrined in the AMOA.

We look forward to learning more about the new plans and revised project at the next meeting.

Thank you for your consideration.
