Re: Zoning Docket 44/23 – Classic Sign Ordinance
Dear Commissioners:
Louisiana Landmarks Society asks that you uphold the Classic Sign Ordinance in the Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance. The Ordinance was created to protect 33 specific signs that are considered landmarks in New Orleans’ streetscape – and history.
The Ordinance states that these “Designated Classic Signs are deemed to be of special significance in the City.” They number only 33 --- and are cherished touchstones. Any changes to these iconic signs should be regarded as defacing public art, as well as the history and memories that accompany them.
The Ordinance, as written, was well-conceived and widely supported. It works to preserve pieces of the city’s visual uniqueness and to memorialize particular eras in our history. Theses classic signs are part of the irreplaceable cultural heritage and distinctive identity of New Orleans. If altered, they are no longer “Classic Signs” – therefore, they should be required to comply with the regulations for new signs.
Please do not allow these iconic signs to be altered. Louisiana Landmarks Society asks that you uphold the Classic Sign Ordinance.
Sincerely,
Sandra Stokes
Chair of Advocacy
