Re: CBD HDLC Appeal of 711 Canal Street

Dear Councilmembers:

Louisiana Landmarks Society asks that you deny the total removal of the awning at 711 Canal Street, and instead, look at alternatives. A solution offered at the CBD HDLC meeting of reducing the awning is an acceptable compromise, and should be required instead of just removal. Eliminating the awning completely leaves a “naked” building on one of our most prominent streetscapes.

The total removal of the awning is a drastic and unacceptable way to handle a very real problem – vagrancy and crime. To be clear, the architectural elements of the building are not the problem. And removal of the awning does not solve the problem, as it is sure to simply move to a different location. We are headed down a slippery slope of addressing social problems by altering our historic fabric – rather than addressing the issue itself.

Historically, the building had an awning, although not as deep. There is a solution that provides a win-win for all. Simply reduce the depth of the awning. Please deny the appeal and require a positive solution.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely yours,

Sandra L. Stokes
