Re: Plaza Tower
Dear Councilmembers:
Louisiana Landmarks Society supports the nomination of the Plaza Tower building at 1100 Howard Avenue for study as a landmark.
Designed by Leonard R. Spangenberg and Associates, and constructed between 1964 and 1969 – this building is historically significant as the first high rise building in New Orleans, and the tallest building in Louisiana at the time. It is particularly important in paving the way for taller buildings to be built on New Orleans’ soft soil substrate by being the first to use Brunspile construction technique.
Already listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 2013, it is long past due to be considered for local landmark designation.
Louisiana Landmarks Society fully supports the HDLC staff in recommending the site for study for landmark designation.
Sincerely,
Sandra Stokes
Chair of Advocacy
