Re: Vote NO on Proposed ABO Permit Changes (Ordinances 34,873 & 34,872)
Dear New Orleans City Council Members,
Louisiana Landmarks Society strongly opposes the proposed ordinances that would create a "probationary" system for Alcoholic Beverage Outlet (ABO) permits in our city. These changes would significantly weaken our current regulatory framework designed to protect public safety and preserve neighborhood stability.
The latest draft proposal shared includes a 60-day automatic approval provision for denied ABO permits, which is deeply concerning. This change would allow businesses to operate despite non-compliance with crucial safety regulations and city requirements. Moreover, the possibility of multiple renewable probationary permits could effectively create a two year loophole in our permitting system.
The scope of these ordinances extends beyond ABO licenses to include temporary live entertainment permits. This additional provision could seriously impact residential areas and adds another layer of complexity to an already problematic proposal.
We find the lack of compelling justification for these changes particularly troubling. The cited goal of "increased government efficiency" is insufficient grounds for compromising our safety standards. If improving efficiency is the true objective, we should focus on properly staffing and funding our permit processing departments.
Our city needs to strengthen, not weaken, its regulatory framework. The fundamental flaws in these ordinances present unacceptable risks to our communities. We strongly urge you to vote NO on these measures. The safety and well-being of our neighborhoods must take priority over expedited business operations.
Thank you for your consideration of this crucial matter.
Sincerely,
Sandra Stokes
